Serve DC - Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library (Washington, DC) : Several hundred volunteers - including U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty, and recording artist Byron Cage - fed the homeless, distributed food, held an H1N1 vaccination clinic, and connected the homeless to other social services at Washington, DC's Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library.
In 1994, Congress passed legislation encouraging Americans to observe the King Holiday as a national day of service that brings people together from different backgrounds to meet needs in their community. The Corporation for National and Community Service was designated as the lead federal agency to execute the King Day of Service. Participation has grown every year since its inception. The King Day of Service provides Americans the opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King through service to meet local and national needs. Bruce Monroe at Parkview Elementary School (Washington, DC) : More than 200 students, community members, Target Employees and Congresswoman Matsui (D-CA) volunteered at Bruce Monroe at Parkview Elementary School on January 18, 2010 in honor of the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
In 1994, Congress passed legislation encouraging Americans to observe the King Holiday as a national day of service that brings people together from different backgrounds to meet needs in their community. The Corporation for National and Community Service was designated as the lead federal agency to execute the King Day of Service. Participation has grown every year since its inception. TC Williams High School, Minnie Howard Campus (Alexandria, VA) : Congressman Jim Moran (D-VA) and Alexandria, VA mayor William Euille joined students and community members in painting murals at TC Williams High School, Minnie Howard Campus.

District of Columbia War Memorial (Washington, DC) : Director of the National Park Service Jonathan Jarvis joined employees from Accenture and students from Howard University in clearing the grounds of the Washington, DC War Memorial.

About the Corporation for National and Community Service

The Corporation for National and Community Service improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. As the nation's largest grant maker in support of service and volunteering, the Corporation engages four million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to their communities each year through the Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, VISTA, NCCC, and Learn and Serve America programs.

 

Participants in Corporation programs and the community volunteers they help coordinate enable thousands of national and local nonprofit organizations, faith-based groups, schools, and municipal agencies to solve tough problems and meet local needs in education, the environment, public safety, disaster response, and other critical areas.
