Patrick Corvington Addresses Corporation Staff - February 2010 : In his first days as Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Patrick Corvington set a tone of strong leadership and management in meetings with top agency officials and the Inspector General.  Corvington, who was confirmed by the Senate on February 11, outlined his top priorities as CEO on a conference call with the agency's staff on February 18, 2010. After thanking employees for their commitment to the agency's mission, Corvington discussed plans to strategically target resources toward addressing key national issues, better demonstrate impact, increase opportunities to serve, and embrace innovation. He also mentioned his commitment to expand the impact of the agency's programs through a strong focus on governance, management and streamlined operations.

Senate Confirms Corvington as CEO of National Service Agency - February 2010 : On February 11, 2010, the U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Patrick Corvington by unanimous consent to be the new Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service. Corvington, a recognized expert on nonprofit management and leadership, joins the agency at a time marked by unprecedented social need and support for national service.

Vice President Biden Serves Lunch to Needy in Washington, DC - November 2009 : Vice President Joe Biden visited the McKenna Center at St. Aloysius Church in Washington, DC to serve lunch to the needy during the Center’s daily meal ministry on November 13, 2009.  Approximately 80 individuals were served a meal of fish, potato salad and baked beans.

Surrounded by members of the Corporation Board of Directors, senior staff, and 33 of the longest-serving agency employees, the First Lady spoke to about 540 staff gathered at Reagan Building and listening by phone from state offices and AmeriCorps NCCC campuses across the country.

Kennedy Serve America Act on April 21, 2009 at a Washington DC elementary school, joined by Vice President Biden, First Lady Michelle Obama, Dr, Jill Biden, Members of Congress, former President Clinton, former First Lady Rosalyn Carter, and an audience of nonprofit leaders and national service volunteers. The President was introduced by the bill’s namesake and longtime service champion Senator Kennedy, who co-authored the legislation with Senator Orrin Hatch.

National Conference on Citizenship - September 2008 : On September 22, 2008, the National Conference held its 2008 Annual Conference held on September 22 at the National Archives in Washington, DC.  At the conference, David Eisner, CEO of the Corporation for National Service, announced that the Corporation will engage five leading universities to expand scholarly and policy research and deepen understanding about volunteering, national and community service, and civic engagement in America.  Mr. Eisner also announced $2.3 million in grants to six organizations to support the use of social networking and Web 2.0 strategies to increase college student service.

Pro Bono Summit - February 2008 : Encouraging employees to use their professional skills in volunteer work, leaders at the Summit on Corporate Volunteerism kicked off a national campaign to engage more of America’s business professionals in the work of nonprofits and communities. A growing number of companies have begun to support employee volunteering by shifting to a “pro bono” approach – where employees apply the professional skills they use everyday in the workplace to help nonprofits meet community needs.

Landscaping, trail maintenance, and food distribution were among the activities that members and volunteers undertook for the national observance of Make A Difference Day.

Rescuing Recess - September 2007 : Tipping off the nationwide celebration of “National Recess Week,” Cartoon Network today announced a major partnership with the National Basketball Association’s social responsibility arm, NBA Cares (www.nba.com/nba_cares), to help enlist one million volunteer hours to rescue recess across America. NBA Community Ambassador Bob Lanier was on hand in Washington D.C. for the announcement, which comes on the heels of a new report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, concluding that recess is the single best way to help kids be more physically active, but that it is in decline in schools primarily serving children from minority and low income families.
