Mayors Bowl - Baltimore, MD April 26, 2013 : On Friday, April 26, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Mayor Edwin M. Lee of San Francisco joined more than 130 AmeriCorps members, Senior Corps volunteers, and representatives from the San Francisco 49ers and the NFL Players Association in a day of service in the city of the Super Bowl Champions. As part of the traditional Super Bowl bet, the mayors wagered a day of service in their opponent’s city. The winning city’s mayor got the opportunity to host the service project, so Mayor Lee traveledl to Baltimore to revitalize vacant lots, renovate a police station, and read to third graders at an area school. Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency for volunteering and service that oversees AmeriCorps and Senior Corps; Joe Briggs of the NFL Players Association; and Navarro Bowman of the San Francisco 49ers joined the service activities. Kate Raftery, the director of AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps, which recently announced the opening of a training campus in Baltimore, also participated.

Mayors Day of Service April 9 2013 : More than 830 mayors from all 50 states are standing together in support of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs by participating in the first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. Together, these mayors represent nearly 100 million citizens or one-third of Americans. The first-ever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service is being led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), Cities of Service, the National League of Cities, and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. CNCS is the federal agency for national service and volunteering that administers AmeriCorps and Senior Corps.

National Day of Service - MLK Day 2013 : National Day of Service - MLK Day - January 19, 2013. In Washington, D.C., at the DC Armory volunteers assembled 100,000 care kits for deployed U.S. service members, wounded warriors, and veterans. The project was sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, Points of Light, and Target, in partnership with Operation Gratitude, the Community Blueprint,Serve DC, HandsOn Greater DC Cares, Volunteer Fairfax, and The George Washington University.

9/11 National Day of Service 2012 : The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of efforts originally launched in 2002 by the 9/11 nonprofit MyGoodDeed with wide support by the 9/11 community and leading national service organizations. This effort first established the inspiring tradition of engaging in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward-looking tribute to the 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attacks. In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with helping to support this effort across the country. For the anniversary, CNCS is working with MyGoodDeed and numerous other organizations to implement one of the largest days of charitable service in U.S. history. Citizens and communities came together in service and remembrance activities in all 50 states, where volunteers painted and refurbished homes, ran food drives, spruced up schools, reclaimed neighborhoods, and supported and honored veterans, soldiers, military families, and first responders.

9/11 National Day of Service 2011 : The tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks were marked by service projects in all 50 states, with hundreds of thousands of volunteers expected to turn out to paint and refurbish homes, run food drives, spruce up schools, reclaim neighborhoods, and support and honor veterans, soldiers, military families, and first responders. The September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance is the culmination of an effort originally launched in 2002 by 9/11 family members and support groups, who worked to establish the charitable service day as a forward-looking way to honor the 9/11 victims, survivors and others who rose up in service in response to the attacks. In 2009, Congress designated September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) with supporting this effort across the country. For the tenth anniversary, CNCS, MyGoodDeed, and HandsOn Network led an effort to organize one of the largest days of charitable service in U.S. history. Thousands of projects took place across the country, ranging from food drives and school beautification to disaster preparation and neighborhood cleanups, with many focused on supporting veterans, soldiers, military families, and first responders.
