For as long as she can remember, Melissa Long has been involved in community service and service-learning. An AmeriCorps*VISTA member with the Economic and Community Development Institute in Ohio in 2003, Long helped small community-based groups earn almost $2 million to help secure homes, employment, and educational opportunities for low-income families. James Thibeault moved from Massachusetts in 1970s to serve as a VISTA in Malden, West Virginia. While there, he joined coal miners' wives and widows to start Cabin Creek Quilts Cooperative, which is still operative today. In this 1999 photo, Thibeault, who was then director of the cooperative, hangs a quilt on the fence for passing visitors to see. Today, Thibeault is a gardener for Good Living Assisted Living, which he owns, and an active volunteer with Jisaidie Cottage Industries, a handicraft cooperative in Nairobi, Kenya. Thibeault's volunteer assistance helped Kenyan artisans living with HIV/AIDS penetrate European and American handicraft markets. AmeriCorps VISTA has a long history of working with faith-based organizations that serve poor communities around the country. AmeriCorps VISTA members help these groups, many of them small and often centered around local places of worship, devise innovative and effective ways to reduce violence, nurture the spirit of entrepreneurship, improve student literacy, combat drug addiction, and increase self-sufficiency among the poor. In 2002, AmeriCorps*VISTA members began lending a hand in the business arena through a new volunteer model called Entrepreneur Corps. With proven business skills and experience, these AmeriCorps VISTA members handled everything from financial modeling and developing marketing plans to holding information sessions and planning fundraisers. They helped to bring low-income Americans into the economic mainstream through a variety of initiatives, including microlending, financial literacy education, and home ownership programs.
