Volunteers paint flags from various countries in a hallway at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the District of Columbia during a service project on Martin Luther King Day. About 20,000 people in the District of Columbia participated in nearly 150 service projects in honor of the slain civil rights leader on January 21, 2008.
Employees of Best Buy, Inc., and volunteers pitched in by painting the Franklin Shelter in downtown Washington at a King Day of Service project sponsored by the DC Jewish Community Center.  An estimated 10,000 volunteers served through more than 80 projects in and around Washington D.C.  They joined hundreds of thousands of Americans who participated in the 2007 King Day of Service, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

On May 6, 2007, the President and Mrs. Bush welcomed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh for a State Visit to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the Jamestown Settlement.  An official arrival ceremony was held on the South Lawn to commemorate the event.
